What to Expect from Your Oahu Family Photo Session

A guide from Oahu family photographer Anna Tsenta

Where Will We Shoot?

Oahu has some of the most beautiful photography locations in the world. Depending on your style and schedule, we might shoot at:

• Kualoa Ranch — dramatic mountains, green fields, iconic Hawaii

• Ko Olina — calm lagoons, golden sunsets, perfect for families with small children

• Lanikai Beach — turquoise water, pristine white sand, magical morning light

• Sandy Beach — dramatic waves, volcanic coastline, stunning at sunrise

• Kahala Beach — calm, quiet, elegant

• Halona Cove — cinematic cliffs, hidden cove, incredible light

• Hilton Hawaiian Village — easy access, beautiful beach, great for Waikiki visitors

• Paiko Beach — serene, off the beaten path, gorgeous reflections at sunset

I’ll help you choose the best location based on your vision, your family’s energy, and the time of day that works for your schedule.

What Time of Day Is Best?

The short answer: depends on the location.

On Oahu, that means either sunrise (roughly 5:45–7:30am) or sunset (roughly 6:00–7:30pm depending on the season).

The light during these windows is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. Midday light on a Hawaiian beach is harsh and creates unflattering shadows — I always recommend avoiding it for portraits.

Sunrise sessions have an extra advantage: the beaches are nearly empty. No tourists, no noise, just your family and the ocean.

What Should We Wear?

This is one of the most common questions I get — and one of the most important.

A few guidelines that always work on Oahu:

• Avoid matching outfits — coordinated tones look much better than identical clothes

• Embrace neutrals and earth tones — cream, white, sage, terracotta, sand, dusty blue

• One person can wear a pattern — floral works beautifully in Hawaii, just keep everything else simple

• Avoid neon or busy graphics — they distract from faces and emotion

• Dress for comfort — if you’re uncomfortable, it shows in photos

I send all my clients a detailed outfit guide after booking. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Do I Need to Know How to Pose?

Absolutely not. In fact, I prefer it when you don’t.

My job is to guide you through the session so naturally that you forget you’re being photographed. I’ll give you directions that might sound a little silly — “pick her up and sway,” “walk toward the water,” “whisper something in her ear” — and those moments of movement and laughter are exactly where the best photos live.

The most beautiful images never happen when people are trying to look beautiful. They happen in the in-between moments.

How Many Photos Will I Receive?

For a standard 30-60 minute session, you’ll receive 25-50+ fully edited images delivered through a private online gallery within one week.

Every image is carefully edited in my warm, cinematic style — consistent tones, natural skin, soft contrast.

How Do I Book?

Simple — just reach out through my contact page and tell me a little about your family, your dates on Oahu, and what you’re envisioning. I’ll get back to you quickly with availability and next steps.

I’m currently based on Oahu and booking through August 2026 — after which I’ll be relocating to Boulder, Colorado.
